Asraf Ali, India Seven-year-old Ashraf Ali’s parents, unemployed due to ill-health
and living in poverty, were happy when Ashraf was offered a job as a domestic
worker by a wealthy and influential acquaintance. They believed the acquaintance’
s promises that Ashraf would provide company for his children and would receive
a government job once old enough.
This position lasted only two weeks. Ashraf was returned to his parents with
shocking injuries. Ashraf explained that he was not given proper food and was
regularly beaten by his employer. The final attack was for drinking the last few
drops of milk left in a glass. For this he was beaten, burned and branded with hot
irons.
